sometimes when i play soldat, it just exits to windows and i see the little harddisk logo next to my clock, when i click it it says ive only got like 5 mb left, but im sure i got 2 gb left on my HD (check it before i play, and after i reboot its back to 2gb) i checked my soldat directory to see if it makes screens or demos or something but no. and yes i turned my kazaa off :p

Is that supposed to be part of XP? It is the first time I hear from that. Could it be an adware itself who is eating your mem??

Do a scandisk bruv. I got a problem with my computer that if I jolt it a little, it powers down. And whenever a comp has to 'hard boot', it forgets the amount of hd space you've really got. Incidently I just recovered about 4 gigs yesterday ^_^

do you mean the defragmentation thingy? or just a scan for errors on your HD? because i cant see how the latter could help o_O

Just the basic simple scandisk, not the defrag. At the end of every scandisk is a proceedure to check the actual volume of your HD, just to make sure. If you set it to give you the full whack of error messages should any appear, you should get something illustrating that actual size varies from something or other....just give it a shot dammit!

i did the scandisk thing and there werent any errors, i played soldat after it and i got the same problem: soldat just exits to windows (or sometimes it just doesnt do anything, screen freezes). this only happens when i play soldat, not with other programs :/

check the performance tab (ctrl+alt+del) and see if it goes to the top. if it does, it smells adware/virus

this makes sense. if you're running low on memory, windows uses the hard drive to simulate memory, ie, virtual memory, which creates a swap file which can literally fill up a hard drive.
give me your os and amount of memory, and i can tell you how to set the virtual memory settings so it doesn't change anymore.

Did you say you had XP? You might as well know that the recommended minimum amount of memory for WinXP is 512mb

I have windows ME, too, and I have a tip: disable system restore.
Note: ignore this if you have already disabled system restore.
Once, I was trying to free up some space, and I ran across this folder called _restore. I went to its properties and, OMFG WTF 12 GIGS??? (this comp has a 20 gig HD btw) Well, after a little searching on google, I found that system restore was the culprit. I don't know what I could have done to provoke it to grow so large, but it can be disabled. First, you should see if the _restore folder is bloated. If you can't find it, type c:\_restore in the address bar thing (the folder may be hidden). If it is bloated, go to the control panel, and click on System. Click on the performance tab, and click the File System button. Check "disable system restore" and reboot. This should delete most of the files in the restore folder.

FWIW, Windows XP will run on 20 gig/ 128MB RAM (slightly slower than 256+, but it works)

If it lets you, I'm pretty sure you can delete it safely. If it doesn't let you delete it, I'll have to dig up that thing on how you can... In any case it should be killed.
