Official Soldat FAQ at soldat.pl:
1. The game does not run! I get an error: cannot initialize 3d hardware, or something like that.

It's a hardware compatibility error:
- Make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers
- Try to run the game in window-mode
- Change the Windows desktop colors from 32-bit to 16-bit
- Try to change some Soldat Config settings (turn off Antialiasing, check 16-bit)
- Install the latest or different video drivers
- Try changing the windows desktop resolution and bit-rate
- Try turning down or up the graphics hardware acceleration (My Computer/Properties/Performance/Graphics)
- Try updating your motherboard drivers
- Check also this this topic on the forum - 3d initialization problem
- If you have Windows NT/2000 install the latest service pack

I have the same problem. Soldat was working fine this morning, but then i downloaded the map maker and got this error on the mapmaker, and now soldat gets the error too.

It's a hardware compatibility error:
- Make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers - done
- Try to run the game in window-mode - how do you do this?
- Change the Windows desktop colors from 32-bit to 16-bit - done
- Try to change some Soldat Config settings (turn off Antialiasing, check 16-bit) - done
- Install the latest or different video drivers - it was working this morning so this is not the problem
- Try changing the windows desktop resolution and bit-rate - done
- Try turning down or up the graphics hardware acceleration (My Computer/Properties/Performance/Graphics) - i cant find that folder at that place, but again it was working this morning
- Try updating your motherboard drivers - it was working this morning
- Check also this this topic on the forum - 3d initialization problem - what im doing
- If you have Windows NT/2000 install the latest service pack - i have windows ME

any ideas?

To tell the truth, im not really sure. I changed some settings, (not sure which) restarted the computer and did some other things for a while, then came back to soldat and it happend to work.
