Hmm...got bored and decided to make this topic. It's simple, what are your top 3 favourite movies of all time and why. Mine are...

1.City of God - Its so chillingly real...from the opening shot to the last frame, the story is split up into sections. The pacing is magnificent. You cant get a better story then this, and guess what, its true. Its a survival story, yet its so different then any other survival story I've seen. I dont wanna give anything away...I reccomend you people watch this.
2.Dangerous Minds - I dont know why, but when I saw it, it touched me in so many different ways. (non sexually)
3. Saving Private Ryan - Best war movie of all time.

1. The Scent of a Woman - The classic Al Pacino film, great movie.
2. Kill Bill Vol. 1 - Over the top gore, Uma Thurman, and plenty of Quentin Tarantino's wonderful stylings.
3. Saving Private Ryan - duh.

Top 3 in no specific order:

Saving Private Ryan - Best. War Movie. Ever.
Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 - Loved the action, loved the story.
Gangs of New York - Gripping story, great acting, folklore is amazing.

I have so many other movies I wanted to put here, but these are the ones that come to mind first.

more than 3, but I just couldn't leave one out:

Donnie Darko - nice atmosphere, great plot. Very good if you don't understand it, even better when you do
Pi - "Dark, hyperkinetic movie about a paranoid mathematician searching for a key number which..."
Requiem for a Dream - some think this a anti-drug movie, find it out for yourself
Memento - unique way of story telling
Jacob's Ladder - dead yet?

those are pretty much at the same level, but they have different qualities.

"hable con ella" : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287467/
"festen" : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154420/
"lost in translation" : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0335266/
"mulholland dr." : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166924/
"cidade de Deus" ("city of God") : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/
...
also "apocalypse now" , "trainspotting" , "la vie rêvée des anges" , "pulp fiction" , "fargo" , "memento" ...

oh..and why ?

hmmm, "hable con ella" is the struggle of life viewed as dancing ballerinas who suddenly seem to be surrended by raging bulls :)

"festen" is a familymovie about keeping up appearances...which work..untill the speech by the son of the celebrated dad... it's a dogma-movie (http://www.dogme95.dk/ ), so it's in docu-style which gives the story an extra dimension...

"lost in translation" is the beauty of love, you are able to discover every day...it's an intimistic portrait about two people who shouldn't fall in love, even if they are made for each other... Oh, and a nice soundtrack too !

"mulholland dr." is a typical lynch movie, which means a metaphoric flood of images makes the viewer more confused after each scene. It's probably the best " QUE?-movie " made. What's great about it ? Well, it's one story in over 100 books. But still is the same simple story.

"cidade de Deus" is a punch in the head of horrible images about streetfights, it's a clanwar on the map ctf_RioDeJaneiro where not even one thinks about whining, it's a documentary about the jungle in every big town, the jungle where only the fittest will survive.

The phantom of Paradise - Really well done remake of the original belfagor story with a '60-'70 music theme, and it's by Brian De Palma.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071994/

Gattaca - Great story about a man's dream, in some reviews it's said to be a movie made as message against the racism, but imo that's just a secondary and probably not intended aspect.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/

Cemetery Man - Best horror film ever, mixed with comedy. The right amount of gore and funny moments to make it mostly enjoyable. Not like any of those [:-censored]ty, plot-less sellout horror movies they make today ( texas chainsaw massacre, the ring, dawn of the dead etc. )
And that of the horror film is just a 'beautiful shell', because the movie is also very poetic and has a meaning. It's weird in some points, and i actually hadn't understood some parts. If you have seen it and didn't like it, this might make you reconsider it ( warning:SPOILERS, if you haven't seen it ) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/board/nest/7498073

Those are the only i remember being really good atm, sometimes i just forget about a really good movie i see.. there are also a few others that i've really liked but they're low-profile and were never translated from italian.

um...

lock stock and two smoking barrels & snatch: they are both just hell funny.
starsky and hutch: funny.
akira, ghost in the shell, spirted away: I love anime, and these movies really inspire me to draw when i am in a artistic slump =P(most anime does).

I like alot of movies but movies really only stand out to me if they are funny or anime.

Blade Runner: best atmosphere in a movie. ever.

LOTR trilogy: you just cant ignore it, the amount of work put into this trilogy is incredible.

Requiem for a Dream: very dark movie, i love how everything looks promessing in the beginning, and how all things go from bad to worse.

Office Space: Some people say only nerds like this movie. Well call me a nerd then, this film is hilarious.

The Godfather, part I and II: best mafia film ever, great play by Al Pacino and Marlon Brando.

Not a film but a TV series: The Sopranos

Apocalypse Now: best war movie

Taxi Driver, with Robert de Niro. nice atmosphere in this movie. story is about weird though, not that thats a bad thing.

City of God is the best realistic movie so far. Apocalypse Now is the best war movie I've ever seen. Dogma/Interview With The Vampire share the non-realistic spot.

Edit: Forgot Schindler's list, which is a great movie.

Surplus: Terrorized into being consumers - Ah, i think it's a great documentary.
Salo: 120 days of Sodom - Just a cute movie you can sit back with your family and enjoy.
Fight Club - You all know about this one. I've been thinking it's a good movie so i put it here too.

And i shall not forget:
Baise Moi - Kind of a rape revenge movie. Lots of violence and sexual content.
