Basically my computer is an old crappy one that cannot do transparencies.

How can I overwrite the graphics so that objects that are supposed to be transparent/translucent simply do not show? Paint them white?

You just paint them green.
It has to be a certain green:
in hex it is: #00FF00 and RGB: 0,255,0

Thanks b00stA, I paint them green and it works for the vast majority of files, but camonet.bmp and camonet2.bmp keep redownloading from servers, overwriting my lovely non-transparent version.

Any help please?
