what is the deal with Guild Wars? is it a free game or something? I was getting dinner at the on campus dining hall and there was a box with at least 1000 Guild Wars CDs in it for people to take for free.

in my experience, the kind of MMOs you pay for have been a lot more fun than free ones. and although gameplay is the most essentle factor, nice special effects and graphics really can make the difference.

You guys dogging GW obvioulsy havn't tried it and therefore... should shut the [:-censored] up.

Guild Wars is an MMORPG made by the same guys who did Starcraft and Diablo. The game has several features that set it apart from other MMOs. First off, the game does not have a subsciption fee. You buy the game at the store, just like you would any other game, and can play it online without additional cost. Everquest, DAoC... all those games have subscription costs ON TOP OF buying the actual game.

Aside from being pretty it's just fun :P oh and Weed...

Everquest and DAoC require you to buy expansions for additoinal areas too. It's part of the deal when it comes to developing a game. And why do a p2p MMORPG? Because you get quality for that money you put in (generally speaking).

You didn't explian why it is better other than the lack of a subscription fee.

Guild Wars is great
i had a fun time in the beta (not this thing, this is an open weekend type thing)smacking monsters around with a group

would be nice to just buy it and be able to play without the fee, which of course it allows you to do, shweet!

Sorry Bmanx, you're right. I was running low on time when I made that post and I apologize for not going into further depth. Here are my reasons for liking Guild Wars over other MMOs with the exception of the subscription fee thing.

Player vs Player Combat (PvP)

In most other MMOs PvP combat is either non-existant or not controlled. On one side of the spectrum you have games like Everquest, where generally speaking, there is no Player vs Player combat. Sometimes you want to be able to wack on someone who's being a prick in game. Also fighting against another player means the fights are going to be more difficult.

On the other side of the spectrum you have games like Ashen Empires / Dransik, where PvP can be done anytime anywhere with anyone. The problem with this is PKers (Player Killers) end up running around and beating the daylights out of players for no reason. This, regardless of what the games RoTC says, this causes the "Pked" pleyers a great deal of grief.

PvP combat is something sort of "set aside" in Guild Wars. But that is not to say there isn't a great deal of it. There is an area where you can fight other players, or go head to head with other guilds in full scale events. This "Guild vs Guild" combat isn't really seen in other games. It is to a degree in Lineage 2, but that game is being run so poorly hardly anyone will play it.

Also seen in Lineage 2, but I suspect it will be better implemented in Guild Wars is siege warfare. If you create a guild you get a guild house, which you must defend against other guilds that might want to lay siege to you (of course, only if you're in a PvP guild). I must be honest and say I have only read about this feature, but what I've read sounds very promising

The only other MMORPG I've played that had a PvP system I approved of was Dark Age of Camelot, which actually implemented "Realm vs Realm" combat. Look into it if you're interested.

Leveling

Every (note the absolute) MMORPG I've played uses the leveling treadmill to increase playing time. You have to kill thousands of the same bloody monster in order to get uberized enough to do the cool quests. They've gone out of their way to cater to players who want to play every now and again, and those players who don't so much play the game as live it. This is done with many different faccets, but the combat system is a primary thing for this.

I will go into more detail on how the combat system works, but it is set up so you can, with just a little bit of play time, get some of the good skills. But... in order to "max out a character" you will have to earn all of the skills available fo your two character classes. As I said... more on that in a bit...

That being said there are TONS of quests available in addition to just wandering and killing monsters. These quests also are set up so there are cool ones to do at every level.

Quests

This is kinda becoming par for the course, but I'll mention it anyways. Quests are multifaceted and have "on the fly" additions to your objectives.

Combat

Combat is skill based. You pay to be taught new skills, and then level those skills up through use. Each class boasts somewhere around 100 skills. So... if you're smart you can just pick out a few and be uberized, but if you feel like being a rabid completionist, you can max out all of your character's skills. Also skills arn't something to be saved for times of need... you use them all the freaking time.

Travel

An odd topic, no? MMOs are starting to address the unholy amount of time you spend running from point a to point b. Guild Wars said "f*ck it" and made it so from anywhere on the map, you can click on a minimap and then a town, and you're given the option to just teleport there. For free. People new to MMOs often have a reservation about this... but you have to understand. I've watched my friend play FFXI and seriously, spend half an hour running from one town to another with a Chocabo. That's not even right.

Anyways if there are any other questions I'll do my best to answer. Oh... the graphics are pwn too :P but again... par for the course.

Happy Bmanx? :)

Oh, as far as the "free" thing that was probably access to the world preview event. Instead of doing a normal open/closed beta they're doing monthly preview events where you can try the game for free. The CD probably just had the client on it.
