Just a random thought, nothing serious:

When I play soldat I often notice that with a lot of players you can define the level of experience by the looks and sometimes even the name. Here are the 3 levels I can often determine:

1. Newbie
- Name : Soldier (duh)
- Looks : Default suit, unchanged

2. Very good player
- Name : Often some complicated unreadable name with hardly any letters in it :)
- Looks : Often in a completely black suit, in most of the cases wearing a hat and having a dark skin color. Probably matrix fans.

3. Very good - Master player
- Name : Mostly an ordinary name with only letters (unless clan member).
- Looks : Usually blonde or white dreadlocks

The rest comes somewhere between #1 and #2.

Is there some kind of plot here?
Does a change of suit or name really give you mystical Soldatian powers?
Or are there "dreadlock" and "Black suit" clans who somehow have the ability to control the combat level of their followers?
Does your level of play influence your taste in clothes?
Maybe it's just my imagination?
AAARGH! What does it all mean?

You catch my drift...

It was just stating something I often see (most of the cases)... I'm not saying the rule is that your looks/name determines which group you come in... It just indicates a high probability :)

November 25, 2004, 2:08 pm
Eh.....the name thing is mostly right IMHO but players have different types of clothing, hair etc....

My choice of outfit & name is:

-=Dirty Bird=-
Dark green everything, helps me blend in with trees and bushes.
No hair.
Helmet.

I would put myself at about very good level. I get where you're going with this system thing and I think you've hit the nail on the head for the most part, but the clothes thing is way off. Just out of curiosity (sp?), how is that a conspiracy anyway?

You are right, so right, Wopkeuh.
Those three levels are easy to find.
But the clothing... is every man's choice. Nothing about your skill.

I don't see that many folks other than me who have dreadlocks and a white suit.

New catagory: Newbie - Bot
- Name : Has a psydo-standard name like Admiral.
- Looks : Wears a helm and says the same dam thing every other second.

New catagory: Doesn't Play by Rules - Evil Person
- Name : Usually some demonic name like Rith the Forgotten or Champion of the Undead.
- Looks : Red clothing, red skin, red hair... or some modification of that.

New catagory: Very Good - Hairy Old Disgruntled Programmer
- Name : Soldier
- Looks : Default suit, unchanged

Just thought I'd contribute a little.

Registered users often prove to be good players as well (in most of the cases), I myself of course am an exception to this rule :p

Alamo, don't get me wrong. i'm not saying that players who does not have a modified skincolor isn't l33t or w/e.
what i did say however (or atleast tried to say), was that a player with a different skin color probably have played for some time, and has engaged himself in soldat community etc. so he would know about the skincolor changing. players who have played longer are more skilled than newbies. period.

Don't insinuate that i said that if you wanted to be a good player, you had to have a different skincolor than the default. Because i didn't.

Wopkeuh
December 9, 2004, 9:14 am
I often change between the completely black suit and the yellow dogtag guy

Uber-master:
Manages to get 100% accuracy with minigun (without aimbot, duh).

Question, do you think wearing bright clothes increases the difficulty for yourself?
If so, does wearing it make you an extremely good player or is the effect the opposite?

El_Mariachi
December 9, 2004, 10:42 am
I dont really understand all the fuzz about what colors yer tiny little soldat wear. Ive never encountered a player and thought, my god, he must be very good or a real n00b. I mean, of course I think it deserves a lil respect when ppl wear the brightest of colors. I do however think its really lame with the invisible heads and the ppl who try to wear clothing to make it look like they belong to the opposite team.
A way to get around that is to enforce clan colors on the server, when I did that, ppl went ballistic and nagged like mad.

Aquarius

I have a bit different observations:

colors:

1. first time player: default colors, default skin ("How do they change the colors?")
2. newbie: camouflage colors ("Look, I'm invisible!")
3. intermediate: crazy colors and changed skin ("Damn, I look 1337")
4. advanced: His favourite colors

names:

1. first time player: "Soldier[1]"
2. newbie: "Superman" or "Sniper"
3. intermediate: "4nti0xid4nt"
4. advanced: "John"

weapons:

1. first time player: Minigun ("I bet the biggest gun is the best!")
2. newbie: Barret ("Hah! Now I know Barret is the best!")
3. intermediate: Any weapon except Barret and Minigun ("I'm so 1337, I don't use Barret nor Minigun!")
4. advanced: Any weapon.

Correction:

2,3,4 - intermediate: Minimi. ("Hey, we can win anywhere if we spray!")

Note: This is coming from someone who regularly uses four of the five auto weapons (five since Minimi is technically an auto)

I got Fuchsia everything(like a real man, none of those metrosexual and Eurotrash colors like green and black, hell, I might even go manlier and get a custom pink-like hue), have Mr. T hair, dark skin, no hat, and gold chain. Oh and my name is Zimmy(blows your mind doesnt it?). I usually pick the spas, but I'm using the D. Eagles more and more. I'd like to say im a very good player, but that'd be a lie, and my mommy tells me not to lie. Although I think your reasoning is well-based, I'm an exception with my name(I'm diffinently no master player). I havent really noticed that much about ppl's colors and such cause I always play CTF, but it seems a lot of the snipers go bald, or at least the snipers that annoy me and I notice more.

I think there are some more categories that got left out:

1. Korean Player

Name: [Cor] Sniper
Clothes: Plain white all over with dredlocks (depends on the weather)
Weapons: Deagles (doesnt know secondary weapons exist)
Attitude: Might as well be playing bots (doesn't talk to anyone EVER)

2. Angry American

Name: [Clan-Xtreme] Gohan Shadow Killxor VII
Clothes: Anything and everything from beige to bright blue
Weapons: M79 (hates campers, but uses Barret when no-one is looking)
Attitude: Might as well be playing bots (he can't beat veterans)

3. Headless Freak

Name: Blood_Ninjah (insert random number here)
Clothes: Black or some garish combination of blues (no head)
Weapons: Deagles (still can't get over Snatch and Counterstrike)
Attitude: Might as well be playing bots (doesn't contribute to game)

4. Silent Pro

Name: John Citizen (like to show they don't need tags)
Clothes: Anything, but not too bright (except Asians)
Weapons: All soldat weapons and probably some more
Attitude: Might as well be playing bots (can beat anyone in game)

5. Honourable Player

Name: (insert something intellectual here)
Clothes: Unknown (no-one has ever seen this rare breed of player)
Weapons: Fists (will charge a line of Miniguns with bare fists)
Attitude: Will say "ns" when killed and say "sorry" when they kill

Polish Player
Name: [Anything] PL
Clothes: All Black, Black skin or possibly headless.
Weapons: Barret, sometimes m79, Law
Attitude: Very patriotic, will speak Polish even if there's no one else in the game with "PL" in their name. occasionally goes 'kurwa'.

Finnish Player
Name: Any Finnish word that makes no sense, like Kaalihakkuri or Leiväkeitin
Clothes: Not too bright colours, teal or brown maybe. Usually has coloured skin
Weapons: Anything, as long as he's as good as possible with it
Attitude: Has to be the best, no matter what. Calls other people noobs if gets beaten, goes 'bah' if dies and 'owned' if kills someone.

Players like these are frighteningly common...

Oliver Stannus
December 12, 2004, 9:59 pm
Yes I agree very much Boxo.

I also managed to leave one out last post:

6. American with Japanese name

Name: Sekushi (probably found it while watching Sailor Moon)
Clothes: Bright green or blue (to distract eyes away from score)
Weapons: This guy would bring a minimi to a knife-fight
Attitude: Nothing is ever good enough for this whiner's random posts

I'm not sure why, but from my personal experience, people who barely speak enough english are the ones who proclaim that they should have killed you, that you're a cheater, you're a cheap camper, and that your mom works at a sweatshop. (?!)

I agree, this is game about killing ppl, who in their right mind would say "sorry" for killing someone. "Sorry" should only be reserved for team-killing, but when you kill who you're supposed to, there's nothing to be sorry about.
