when you look at the forum logo, you see that the gosteks are made and shaded in a way that it looks more 3D-ish.
is it possible to do that ingame?

Yeah, those are good, I don't think the 3Dish would be so great though... A little would be cool, but not too too much. :)

Yeah, I noticed that the contrast is a little bad in soldat making screen captures look even worse.

good idea. just don't go to extreme with the 3dness
