When you change a .bmp picture to a .jpg file in PAINT, it's crappy.

You can also try the GIMP (www.gimp.org) since it seems that you don't have any graphics program to speak of right now.

Also try the .png format. As far as I know it offers smaller file sizes than .jpg at same quality.

I woulnd't suggest GIMP for Windows. I have a handful of problems with it, particularly with fyle format conversions.

For small pictures, use TinyPic! That way the imageshack interface doesn't clutter it!
