Where do you download MP3s?

I haven't downloaded MP3s since the whole "illegal downloading" scare thing happened when napster was shut down.

So...what are some good programs or websites to download MP3s these days for free?

Vijchtidoodah

By the way, for those of you who are interested. I've been told that downloading MP3s isn't illegal just like recording movies isn't unless you're sharing them with other people or downloading a large amount in a short timeframe.

I haven't taken the time to research this myself, but it was from someone who works as a government specialist so... I suppose that's a good source. But that's only in the US...

I think AOL gives out free downloads sometimes, but I think they do it with a limited number. So you really have to be fast if you wanna get some free music. I'd try to help you more but I'm still using Kazaa Lite+++.

Get WinMX, best p2p program i've used for mp3s, and it's not infested with spyware and fake files like Kazaa.
(although lately there have been some odd fake users, but they're easy to spot...)
[URL]
If you do decide to get it I made some nice original looking icons + color theme, I'll post them if you want.

Music piracy is very lame, if you support the band just buy their album! It is illegal if you download ANY copyrighted content without authorization, but the RIAA won't subpoena you just for 1 file, because they have bigger problems to focus on (Like the people file sharing thousands of files.) Downloading any copyrighted music is illegal, not just files from artists affiliated with the RIAA, but only the band will be able to take action against you in those cases. Don't waste their time!

Pfft.

Bit-torrent is what it's all about. It's fast, it's easy and you're downloading what it says you're downloading, unlike some programs *COUGH* KAZAA! *COUGH*

Firstly

1. Download and install Azureus (I've already selected an American mirror so it should just start downloading immediately), then restart your computer.

That's done. Now, set of steps to download what you want:

1. Go to Torrent Spy, and before you do anything, bookmark it.

2. Type what you want in the search and hit 'Go'

3. Now, there should be a list of the available torrents to download (Torrents are small files which you open with Azureus to start a download). Now, you can see there is a row with:

Torrent Name | Category | Size | Files | S | D | Health

S = Seeders
D = Downloaders

Now, basically, the more seeds, the faster the download will go. Also, the better the health, the more likely it is that you will be able to download the file:

[IMAGE] = Good
[IMAGE] = Bad

4. Select the best one (This site automatically lists them in the order of 'Best -> Worst' according to the amount of seeds) and it will take to you another page, where you can finally download the torrent. Scroll down the page to see the exact files you will be downloading, and when you're happy, hit the 'Download Torrent' button.

5. When the download is finished, open the file, which should open up in Azureus, select where you want to save it and voila! Don't worry about closing Azureus, when you start it again it continues the download.

Just to show you how fast it downloads, I've included a screenshot:

[IMAGE]

To be honest, that's not really fast for the program...100kb/s - 200kb/s is fast, and I do very often get between 70kb/s - 120kb/s.

I wrote this huge tutorial so that you will realise how good this program is, I honestly don't understand people who say Soulseek and Kazaa are better. You can download Music, Computer Games, Movies, TV Shows, and stuff...have fun.

yeah azureus is better for standard music albums, but soulseek has rare demo tracks etc and unreleased stuff that is very hard to find. that's why i use azureus..for..err..looking at music and not pirating it..and soulseek for looking at rare music but not downloading it. oooh yeahhh.

I personally don't give a crap about bands or supporting them. I'm a poor b*st*rd who takes what he can get. On the other hand I don't use Kazaa for downloading music. A lame Pirate I be, yoho, yoho.

lol, first of all: most tv shows are sold in boxed sets (South park, crank yankers, CSI, 24, etc..the list goes on)
second of all, networks get money based on advertising. advertisers only buy adspace if the channel gets plenty viewers. if people download tv shows, the network is robbed of viewers and fewer people will advertise them. unauthorized downloading of any copyrighted content is illegal.

enjoyincubus
February 19, 2005, 6:20 am
Bearshare is infested with spyware, but if you're willing to put up with one popup at startup and one install program, you're on your way to 500-1000 MB/s downloads. Pretty efficient program, despite the few downfalls. It's got a pretty fair selection of compilations. I was able to find even some of the most minute of bands through it, and got many rare works.

If you're into indie material, however, and are not caught up in this copyright mess, you can find most bands graciously giving away mp3's on their home sites. That is, until they sign with a major label and the label throws a fit (and a wad of cash) to get them to take the free music down. It's sad. Really.

ok Johnny Cochran. You implied that downloading television shows was legal. Every single television show that appears on public or cable or digital or HD or whatever -- they're all copyrighted. Every television show I've ever seen a torrent for has been copyrighted.

Everything is copyrighted, but the 'creator(s)' is/are free to give everyone the right to copy their 'copyrighted original' file(s). So even music you can download for 'free' is copyrighted. ( Otherwise you could put their music on a cd and simply sell it, without giving royalties to the creators of the music.)

The default thinking is : " You'd assume that the 'work' is copyrighted and may not be copied unless you know otherwise. "

There is an expiring of copyrights after a certain time, but for the 'recent' files ( created in the last 15 years ) you may be pretty sure everything what was created is copyrighted ( as decided in the Berne copyright convention ).

Hah. You tried comparing BitTorrent with SLSK.
They're both completely different concepts with different (dis)advantages.

Anyway, I suggest you guys stop posting infos on how to illegally download files. Styx prolly won't like it..

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But anyway, downloading music has become so common, I don't think he'd mind too much (he probably has tons of mp3s and movies himself :))

I mainly use torrents for downloading music, if I'm looking for something rare I use SoulSeek.

You can also try google :), here's how:

acually, Shareaza is the best one because it connects to multiple networks. one of which is the Limewire network. so when your connected to shareaza, its like being connected to limewire and several other networks such as edonkey. there are like 8 networks you can connect to all under the Gnutella2 server, which is what powers shareaza. and shareaza can use bittorrent seeds.

If you want legal music at a really cheap price, best way are russian online sellers. I inquired a lot about it, and http://www.allofmp3.com/ seems to be legal, and has pretty much everything (also a lot of old stuff) except less known groups and rares. You get a decent DL speed and you can prewiev at low quality all the tracks you want, so for 2 cents per MB you dl, i think it's worth it.
