I'm trying to download this game because it looks rather fun. Now, how do I do that. I tried but I fail at doing it.

What exactly is your problem?
Go to the download section of www.Soldat.pl and download it from one of the mirrors:

I'm in the US and if I try to use one of those mirrors I get an error page. When I use an one from another country then I'm good.
Or does it not matter which mirror I use?
And is playing and whatnot free?

Any mirror is fine. All of them will get you the same Soldat.

Soldat is shareware, meaning that you're free to play it all you want. Michal Marcinkowski, the author, only asks for a donation of $9, which gets you a few extra features, such as colored jet-flames, in-game MP3 music, and player profiles so you can easily switch between configurations.

The donation (also known as registration) is optional, but it is recommended as Michal put a lot of work into Soldat.
