Is it possible to change the screen resolution of SOLDAT as i hav a really crap monitor when if its in 640 x 480 a small chunk of the right hand side of picture is missing so i have to change the horizontal setting on the monitor and change it back when i got back to the desktop (800 x 600).

No, it's not possible. You can use windowed mode to avoid problems like that.
