To sum it up for you: No, you don't have to pay to play Soldat since Soldat is shareware. However, if you want access to the extra features in Soldat, you'll have to donate $9 to Michal Marcinkowski. You can play Soldat for free, but he deserves a nice reward for all the work he puts into the game.
