I just wanted to share this article with you. I wrote it tonight after a sequence of events inspired me to write... something about it.

After writing it, I submitted it to the school newspaper, with hopes that they would put it in their "My View" section, where students can write in to share their opinions on stuff (the section is appropriately located in the Ed/Op section of the paper).

That was a nice read. This is why I will never smoke anything in my life. I don't wanna make my body all nasty like.

A few of my family members smoke, I love them very much, but I can't stand to be around them. Their teeth are blackish, they always smell really bad, and they cough a lot.

If you smoke you're only killing yourself faster. I mean, if you want to die, just go hang yourself. It's only my opinion though, I can't control other people's lives.

Hmm, read your article, and it's nice that you want to share your experiences and knowledge about cancer. Most smokers are aware of the danger of cancer and know what it takes to treat or to attempt to treat cancer, i think, so you should know, being an occasional smoker myself, that most smokers are aware of what they are doing with their body, which damage they cause ( to themselves and to the people around in the same room/environment ) by lighting up another cigaret. I can understand you absolutely don't see the use, the purpose of smoking, as the majority of people do, and maybe the most smokers don't even know why they actually smoke, so it's quite difficult to demonstrate the uselessness of smoking as the reason is rather abstract.

To be honest, i have no idea why i smoke. Absolutely no clue. I hardly smoke in public or with friends, so it's not a habit i addopted to belong to a certain group of people. If i'm addicted to cigarets , it won't be cause the nicotine but the habit, it helps me - and this will maybe sounds strange - to concentrate me, to think brighter, to focus myself on one thing ( maybe cause i simply have an object in my hands, so i can't distracted by taking another objects, just a psychosomatic effect ).

I don't know how it is on the US, but here, in Belgium, we got slapped every day with pictures of smokers lungs, smokers teeth etc. in anti-tobacco commercials. On each packet of cigarettes you buy here there is the message ' smoking is deadly ' ( by example : http://www.gemm.nl/webgemms/sigarettenpakje.gif ).

And still we keep smoking... :)

Hmmm... very detailed. I don't smoke, gladly, but my firends do it and it annoys the hell out of me. Though, with you cancer, this may seem stupid, but why did you have to worry whenever you swallowed?

swallowing was hard because of the radiation treatments. there was relatively strong radiation treatment being doen to my jaw and throat, and some of the side effects of it included a very dry, scratchy, sore throat, all the time.

My back was also effected, it was almost like a permanent sunburn which has left my back more sensitive to touch than most. I can imagine that the inside of my throat was something resembling subburned, seeing as that is how my back felt for the longest time. Luckily my throat ills subsided a couple days after the radiation treatments stopped.

I've been living with a 1-and-a-half-pack-a-day smoker for my entire life and I still do. I don't think that's really a reason not to do it. I tried smoking, I liked the feeling of it and I still do it once in a while at weekends or so.
Still I don't like having to breathe polluted air right after standing up... That's why I've successfully banned smokers in the kitchen in the morning ^^

so what if you like it for whatever reason... don't you guys realize that you're setting yourselves up to die a very unpleasant, prolonged death?

Pulp
April 24, 2005, 7:48 pm
It's not a fact that someone who smokes will die a very unpleasant prolonged death. It's fact that smokers have a much higher chance to die on a terminal disease than non-smokers. Most smokers I know just have accepted the possible dangers caused by smoking.

And than just this, Cancer is a disease that comes into existance by an accumulation of changes in the DNA. There are a lot of factors able to make small changes to your DNA, but most of these changes will be "repaired" by your own cells. Why certain factors are stimulating cancer is still not fully known, but it's a certainty smoke of cigarettes cause damage to the cells needed to restore changes in the DNA. When someone who smoked for his whole life lives for by example 90 years, it is cause his strong 'restore-mechanism'. ( I also have to remark that children are much easier influenced by changes into their DNA, because some of those changes can't be restored and will result in everlasting damage. So basicaly smoking with children in your neighbourhood, is giving them a higher risk for several diseases as cancer, asthma, etc..., not to mention what will happen when the child smokes by himself/herself)

A 'rough' estimation is that about 50 percent of the smokers die by the consequences of smoking ( 1/7 chance he/she will die cause lungcancer ).

i get paranoid sometimes about smoking but only do it when i have no dip. i rather use smokeless tobacco products cuz i worry less when i do them. besides smoking has no taste and smokeless tobacco has different tastes and is stronger (my opinion)

Smoking cigarettes, I see as a giant farking waste.

Smoking cigars, however... They're expensive, meaning that you probably won't be able to smoke them often.. But however you'll taste the fine fruits of the earth. You gonna do something - better do it properly. Ain't nothing more status-ifying than smoking a 20 dollar cigarette.

Something tells me that nobody really is aware of what's going to happen to them when they get older. They're told about it, but shrug it off with a "Yeah, I know. *puff*"

Hell, even if you see someone who has had their life [IMAGE]ed over by cigarettes doesn't show you much.

That's some nice proof to your statement.

My friend lost 2 years in school because of marijuana addiction, he admitted himself he got addicted to it.

Hitman
April 29, 2005, 10:49 pm
That depends. Marijuana isn't physically addictive like other drugs; it's more likely that people become addicted to the nicotine if they roll their spliffs with tobacco. However, psychological dependence [to marijuana] can occur, but very rarely.

I am an example of the above. After going back to school in September, new people came to my school who do blaze (not many of my friends do, and those that do are worried about the possibility of getting caught) resulting in me smoking far more pot that I used to; we just took the piss. Bla, bla, bla, long story short; I became addicted to the nicotine and started smoking. Plus, it's nice to have a cigarette afterwards.quote: I think tabbacco is worse then mj because you can't get addicted to mj bcus my dad used to smoke it and he is fine.Actually, Marijuana can be more dangerous than smoking tobacco as it has a higher concentration of 'bad' chemicals.

Check your facts before you start debating.

So a couple of joints a year wont make my brain fry and make me turn to hard drugs. See this is what "the be realy good" propaganda does. Young people think that smoking marijuana would eventualy bring a person to hard drugs. When I was in primary school a biology teacher explained how he was once a smoker and how he almost got addicted to marijuana and hoody-do. Ironicaly, his explanation got one of my girl classmates very exited, seeing how she could be cooler by smoking cigarettes. So the very evening when we(a group of classmates) went out she bought a pack of cigarettes. There was 5 of us and nobody had ever smoked before. What hapened? I felt high for the first time, though I didnt like it(the taste not being high) and didnt touch another cigarette until first grade in highschool. Same with other 3. The girl that wanted to be cool, actualy threw up, but still chose to smoke another cigarette... And then throw up again when we escorted her home.

Idiot..

"This is some good [IMAGE]ing cigarette.." ? So apt.

Wait, so you're telling me you got high from a...cigarette. It's most likely that you probably just felt dizzy.

As far as pot is concerned, first time I tried it, I threw up due to the fact that I hadn't smoked [cigarettes] before. I think it might also have had something to do with the fact that my friend (that [IMAGE] :P) rolled a pure spliff.

You can get bad 'highs' on Marijuana though; they're called 'Whiteys' (E.g. 'You pull a Whitey'). I have had this only once which only happened about 4 months ago. I was with some friends (Thank god for them cause they had to carry me back :P) out on the school fields, had a couple of drags and then held the third one in, as we were playing traffic lights (You hold it in until the spliff is passed back round to you). Anyways, about 30 seconds after exhaling it I felt dizzy and weak; I went completely pale, had something that felt like cold sweat, and my eyesight started to whiteout. Nevertheless, after being carried back to my bed and lying there for about 20 mins, I was fine again, just high as hell. All in all, it was a good night :P

Yeah you're right, I felt woozy and good in a way. But the taste was.. bad, I cant explain it. The thing that boder's me most about cigarettes is that the smoke sticks to your clothes and stays there for three days if you dont put them(the cloths) out on fresh air. Thats why I like weed better. It smells good and my parrents know litle what that smell is. Hurray!
