Preface declaration:
Taal did not give me this idea. I just didn't have time to post about it before, that's all (and if you still think he did, then just give him credit for the basic idea, wh'ever).
If you haven't read Taal's thread, I'll go use a game as an example since it's kind of complicated.
Let's say there's a DM server on Arena1 with Mod-Soldier and Soldier playing on it. Mod-Soldier has everything possibly changed in Soldat changed (gostek, animations, explosion anim., parachute, etc.) and Soldier is playing the standard version of the game. Mod-Soldier chooses his rifle, and that's a Winchester. Soldier also pulls out a rifle, but that's the standard Ruger 77. When he encounters Mod-Soldier, he sees him using the Winchester, and hears the new .WAVs whenever he fires & reloads, etc., but Soldier himself is still plain with regular weapon 6. If he is killed he sees the Kill List's interface-gfx for the Winchester instead of his own rifle.
Something like that. And Mod-Soldier would perform his own custom /victory anim. and Soldier would see that it's different from his own, and also the sound would be different. This can also apply to the Berserker sound effect, Cluster Grenade images, the Predator sound effect, capping (if the sound is changed for the capper), grabbing the Rambo Bow, showing the owner of the GL's altered explosion anim., etc., etc., etc.
The only conflicting problem is the SG (maybe use a mod version if only one person is playing with a mod, and revert back to normal if another person with a mod joins). There might be some others I can't think of right now.
It'd look weird fighting soldaten among a mecha :-P So for that reason you can choose to in Options conceal your mod from everyone else, and also another checkbox would be there for seeing all other players use only your mod as if they had it.
I don't think it would create that much more lag; it would just send modded bullet image along with the time when a soldat shoots his Uzi, and also any necessary weapon images would be transferred just like how the information for a soldat's movement is done.
Commentary, everyone! IMO This'll all probably be obsolete upon the next version...
EDIT I forgot to say that discarded weapons are still from their respective mods so you can pick up and use a weapon from another person's mod. That'd be the main "tourist attraction" feature of universal mods.
