So...I somehow drew two study halls this semester, and I do all my homework in the first one...naturally, I need a way to waste the time during the second study hall. We have a kick-ass network in the library, but I need a way to download Soldat and install it on my H: drive (personal drive) so the teachers don't catch it if and when they exercise their "anytime, search and destroy" powers that I've been hearing so much about.

I already figured out how to d/l Soldat, from a place like download.com so the filter doesn't catch it. I d/l'ed it to my H: drive in a hidden file so it wouldn't be visible in a cursory scan or a passing glance, but the problem is that the school server has the control panel disabled for student users so I can't make the file visible and install Soldat. I tried using the run command too, but of course they disabled that as well. Any ideas on how I can install Soldat without getting busted? They've got a strict policy here, so if you get caught downloading unapproved software or playing games you get kicked out for the quarter, or something similarly drastic.

You throw a muffin at the dean.
Either that or shoot a bra-cannon at him.
Or just ask him to....
Or bring a laptop with soldat on it...

I suggest you don't install any games on school computers.. I know how it ends and it's not good.

Reminds me of my school's security system.
$350 spent individually on each computer, to eliminate all of the unapproved sites, through a specially hidden tracking device-blocker-thing, three different kinds of spyware, all to be disabled with a right-click.

Ha ha... yeah, my school wasnt all that great with their security, either.

T-Money, try burning soldat's files from your computer onto a CD or put it on a jump drive. That way, when you do get to school, you could just pop in your CD or jump drive and stash the files in some remote folder on the hard drive. This way you dont have to worry about being able to install it. But do not put it in your H:/ drive. My friends and I always got busted for that. They cant tell who it was that put it on the hard drive. (Unless you're a frequent offender that is... Then they just have to guess...) This method should work wonders. Always did for me & everyone @ my school playing Warcraft III anyway.

EDIT: But do watch out. If it's in the library, you'll have people watching you like a hawk. And remember, you didnt hear this from me.

One time in Programming I class a few years ago we had a clueless substitute teacher, so we all downloaded Soldat from a copy that had been installed on the network (N:\) drive, one guy set up a server on the LAN, and I've been playing Soldat at home ever since. Another time after that we did Quake II (I think it was II), although I didn't join in myself that time.

If you're going to try to beat the system, I suggest making a hidden folder (if you can) and putting it in another inconspicuous folder, like with MS Office or something. Then, just use the Command Prompt to actually run Soldat.

And if all else fails, there's always a chance that they missed the Pinball game in the Windows NT folder, which is in the Program Files folder.

And if THAT fails, then I guess you'll just have to resort to making questionable content with Paint and Movie Maker, or something.

Yeah, right. The only librarian is a fat old dude who never gets up. All i gotta do is mute it and he's none the wiser...that's why god invented the old alt+F4 thingamabob.

Anyway, it works, and I haven't been caught yet. Happily butchering people during 8th hour study hall!

Dude...double post.

And it's kind of half the point to watch peoples' expressions when they realize you've, ah, "visited" at their comp.

i played soldat all the time at school.
i copied the soldat folder to my USB drive at home, and at school, i would copy and paste the folder to My Documents (running it from the USB drive directly is reallly slow). then you just play it from My Documents, and delete the folder afterwards.

idk how you hope to do all of this to finally install soldat, taking the precautions to have it not found in their scan.... but then you expect to just sit there in the middle of a computer lab and play a game without anyone noticing?

I done that with a different program a few years back, I put the program in a remote file that was also availible to the whole network so everyone could play it :P But then someone ratted me out and i got busted.

Ironically enough, I'm playing it as I type. Well, not as I type, but it's running in the background.

As I said, the librarian's an old fatass who isn't exactly up to going round to check what everyone's doing. Plus, the computer desks where you can sit after you check out a laptop are little alcoves, so nobody can really see what you're doing. And it's not like anybody's going to tell on me anyway. The library's empty most of the time.

I have no clue how you can do this as on our school computers when we try to download stuff it will say "This option has been disabled by an admin".

well our computers at school suck so much that i would never even think to have soldat there, that would ruin the game and it would lag like an auto-law only weapons mod server.

Oh...bummer dude. I hate to tell you this, but...what the hell. Our laptops in the library are revamped IBM thinkpads (old i know) with 512 MB ram, 50 gig hard drives, kickass video cards...it's almost like they want us to play games. Wierd.

our school isnt strict on games now-a-days. But we always get a game or two of soldat in somedays. Its pretty easy though, we always have a weird system folder in our private drives that is hidden. I keep my crap in there. All i need is a soldat install, and i just install it on any comp i use :P it stays there usually unless they are doing a massive cleansweep of their systems. A few times when we had a substitute teacher, we got the WHOLE class to play soldat on a massive network game. the computer techs walked in and saw all of us playing, LOL the look on his face was funny as.

My school ain't strict about anything concerning computers. If you are in the upper 3 years, you can just go and grab a notebook and do whatever you please with it (WLan, broadband). They aren't secured in any way either. And if I did something forbidden, nothing would happen: The admin is a nice teacher of mine who does not give a crap as long as you don't disturb anyone.

Lucky you Alamo.. I got banned from the computers for 6 moths for hacking the system. But just 4 days ago they let me use the computers again :D
