I use Audacity and Audacity is the greatest and free. It doesn't sound as nice as some other programs though, but the other programs are all in the $300-2000 range and are about 2 gigs, so even pirating them would be a chore :( ..oh, and it was a chore, and the god damn thing was corrupted.

WavePad is teh [CENSORED]. I don't know what kind of editing you're looking for, but WavePad can clean up sounds, edit frequency ranges, amplify, cut and splice etc etc etc. Basically just a beginner's program.

The best out there (IMO). If you can 'register' it, that is.

I quite like cooledit pro if you can get your hands on warez copy..

Though it's mp3 format is a bit antiquated. Doesn't write to LAME mp3.

While we're on the subject of audio editors, can someone recommend me a program that is just as good or better than Steinberg Cubase?

if you want to be truly hardcore, you'll use Windows Sound Recorder... it can do frequency changes, sound insertions, everything you need really

better than Cubase SX...hmm. Propellerheads Reason maybe beat it. http://www.propellerheads.se/

It doesn't seem as though Reason is a sound recorder also. It only take midi keyboard input...is there something equal to or better than cubase than takes sound input from other devices?
