Every time I or my friend host a game, we can find each other's games on the lobby server however we can't join them.

I can't see any reason why this should happen, save for the fact that she lives in the USA and I live in Australia. If that IS the problem, can it be solved?

yes it can be solved.

in order to join her game you just need to put her ip address in the box in the join game screen, make sure port and password are set and off you go. same if she wants to join yours, just an ip, port and password.

possibly it is some sort of firewall issue? do either of you have any? if you can ping her server then you should be able to join it.
