I have both a CD drive and a DVD drive installed in my computer on the same ribbon, both of their jumpers are set to CS.

The DVD drive is working fine now, but the CD drive can only be accessed if I have a CD with data on it in the drive. If I stick a blank CD in there and try to write files to it, my computer suddenly tells me "G:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function."

What do I have to do to make the computer recognize that both drives are there?

Right Click on the G:\ Drive and Select Properties, Click on recording, and check the box for enabling recording on the drive, then press OK, good as new

Now that that's out of the way, I have a CD and DVD drive as well. What is good CD burning software (preferably free)?

If you have windows, just right click on the file you want burned and select Send to > CD Drive.

Been using it, all my friends are using it, its great, easy and reliable.

I am using nero at the moment.

It's free, open source and simple, but still does the stuff you need it to.
I use Nero too, but sometimes I just use BurnAtOnce: the result is the same.
