I'm not really sure where to post this, and I would have asked Chakra via PM but he doesn't seem have them enabled.

Which of these is considered "getting around the swear filter" and will result in a twenty post fine? I'm just curious, that's all.

I will use "Jesus" as an example, since it was once blocked by the filter. If there's other methods I hadn't thought of you can tell me which not to do either in this thread or with a PM.

1)Replacing the letters with asterisks (j*sus)
2)Using the spoiler code to block out letters (j
e
sus)
3)Replacing key letters with similar looking letters (jesvs)
4)Using the copy+paste function from charmap to post the entire word (jesus)
5)Swearing in another language (jésus)

Hmm...pm's disabled? Ok said that to me earlier. Weird. I'm still getting people messaging me though.

I don't particularly care for people getting around the swear filter, unless it's excessive or put to bad/insultive taste. If the moderators do however, thats their decision entirely, and technically the rules....which covers all 5 options of yours I suppose.

let's remove the swear filter but warn for excessive swearing!

Yep, simply remove the swear filter. Never was and never will be useful, censorship only provokes people to more swearing ( which led to just too much swear-smileys ).

Well lets see what others think first. Throw your opinions in here and we'll see what happens.

Removing the filter certainly would liven things up, especially in the Bash Pit.

This almost seems like a job for our new forum features.

removing the swear filter is a bad, bad idea.

I'm for removing the swear filter. I never liked these stupid icons replacing a word anyway.
Cursing is part of all languages, and censorship is for elitist fascists. We're meant to be free! ;)
I'm aware that people on this boards tend to be very young most of the time and often abuse these words. But seriously, a swear that isn't censored with a huge red icon above it it less eye-catchy that a normal swear word with regular font and colour.

That just my opinion. Perhaps you should just replace the censor icon by stars or stuffs like that to censor. Whatever.

or a revolutioning new idea!!!:

replace the bad words with other words.

for instance "f*ck you" would be "you silly man"

and sh*t could be dung so an attempt of an insult could be "oh you silly man, your such a dunghead"

just suggesting :P

For the love of God, no, Psycho. :)

Maybe a poll could actually come in handy in this case, wonder how the forumreaders/writers think about this...

The swearfilter is there for a reason: however if you use asterikses, you basically censor your own swears. All the other cases you mentioned are bypassing the swear filter I recon.

Removing the censored smilies would just encourage people to swear, since they wouldn't have no boundaries. Besides, you can judge the quality of a post with all those red heads sticking out of it before you even read it :)

I'd just like to be able to use the spoiler-bypass, it's fun.

And I'd just like to enjoy my fetishes freely without being taken to have forced medical care in a Sanatorium.

What's your point? If it's against the rules, you aren't allowed to do it, no matter how fun you may find it.

I absolutely disagree, cause the swear-filter is not able to filter words in a context. It's bollocks you can't mention Je-sus without bypassing the filter, same with g-ay, sh-it, f-uck, etcetera. Also, I would be rather shocked if you still feel offended by any of these words in any context, they're commonly used in IRC, on websites, in real life, etc ...

This is a game-forum, words like these are part of the vocabulary of the people who play the game, so let them use the words ( for Queen's sake ). I've been on a lot of political forums, and not any had a strict censorship-system as this one, simply as a filter excludes too many possibilities of meanings of a word.

Thanks to the sophisticated censorship-system you can't understand half of the sentences, as you need to guess what word could be maybe censored. Believe me, a post with 10 'f-ucks' ( or what you assume the words could be ) can be more interesting than 10 posts with cynical sentences fitted in an indifferent, regardless package. It's about the meaning, the substance, not about how the meaning is phrased.

True, but I believe the recent actions of the french migrants are similiar: after all, they are just expressing how much they are unsatisfied, and it's the meaning that counts, and not how it's done, right?

By the way, you can say Jesus, Satan, [CENSORED], even St. Habakukk without the censor smiley. It's all about that people should avoid offensive behaviour if it's unnecessary. Besides, seeing an occasional '[CENSORED]' from someone who rarely swears has greater impact.

EDIT: Slang for homosexual is censored? Update the list man.

Fuck still works amongst others. I say keep the smileys, in concurrence to Demonics' post.

For offensive behaviour and/or excessive use of swearwords there's always the ban-option. :)

I kinda like Raptors Idea .... replace the F word with .... feck? ..

Otherwise yes, as I was hoping others would soon illustrate, the swear filter is there for a reason. Theres kids out there. And feck knows what legal crap is in it too. Either way, s'not something that should be openly encouraged.

I'd suggest making the censored smiley have a title= tag, so if you hover over it, you see whatever swear word it is.

e.g. [IMAGE]
(the cursor didn't get shown, but it's on top of the censored image.)

I never really understood why there's a swear filter in place when there's none in Soldat, but I don't really care what happens to it.

Actually, there are plenty of people that are very easily offended by swear words in general, when you use their god's name, or when you use their race or sexual orientation as an insult.
