Did you even read about it?
Michal clearly says he will NOT give up soldat, he'll just be working on another project for a while! So i don't suppose no one will be taking over.
[EDIT]:
Quote:Originally posted by Michal MarcinkowskiI have started a new game project some time ago. I would like to announce it here because I'm seeking people to help me out with it. I've set a temporary website (http://www.soldat.pl/crimson) where all the info is.
This does not mean I'm quitting Soldat or anything like that. I've always been doing other stuff and it didn't stop me from releasing new versions from time to time. More info on this project and Soldat later.

Haven't checked the forums for some time now (had to learn for my final exams) and the first thing I read is you talking about Soldat being discontinued! But it's good to know that no new information was given since that plane-game announcement :) Phew!
Im sure he'll die one of these days. On that note, Michal did you get my letters?

Its not like none can do what he has done. Its not like no one can take over if he decided to stop.
He has got many lines of code more than someone who would start form scratch. Thus no one wants to create a rival.
And by his own doing he is the only one who is allowed to work on it.

I'm not saying no one can take over in a general way of speaking, i'm talking spiritual here. Michal's got his heart in it, Right chum?.. And no one will ever get it like that i think!

When he releases the source code, I will experiment with it, and if I figure it out Soldat VDEZ

when and if he releases the source code, i suspect it will be torn to shreds and many factions will come out of it, thus having the original soldat populated by few people...i hope not

Well, chakapoko maker (veteran, the best mapmaker I've ever known) believes that Crimson Glory signals the end of Soldat and that Soldat is near its final completion. I believe so as well. I don't think there will be a Soldat 1.6, in my opinion.
Last I heard, Marcinkowski would release Soldat as open-source upon its final version.

Really Keron? Man, that's sad :|
But when you come to think of it, changing soldat anymore might actually ruin the game. Maybe it's for the better then. And as I said above, soldat doesn't really need to be changed. I just hope michal will still stick around, should soldat influence itself in a bad way. By that I mean, if the game's left to itself, it will most likely take more and more shape of the ppl who playes it. This will mean an overload of spammers, campers and tk/sk'ers, I fear.
If michal abandones soldat, less and less people will actually care.
This is ofcourse all a bit extreme, but it might just end up like that over time.

Final version of Soldat isn't necessarily a bad thing. A final version will mean no more change, which is good and bad...I doubt any of us will be playing soldat in 10 years, so it doesn't really matter. The sad part is that the younger kids won't get to play it.
I certainly hope MM doesn't release the source code with the final version...that would shatter the community beyond repair, I think.

If the Soldat source is ever released, I'm pretty sure it'd only be to an individual or group that he personally trusts can handle it competently.
Or, considering Soldat's popularity, he could probably sell licenses--when Daniel Brockaus (aka Intent Software) came out with Astonia III: The Conflict, he shut down Mercenaries of Astonia, but offered licenses to run a server and modify the source for ~$500 each. The licenses have actually sold relatively well, considering the size of the original incarnation's player base (although I'll admit that it was an unusually dedicated one). Given the fact that far more people play Soldat, and the serious financial commitment that's necessary on the part of the buyer, I imagine such a system could potentially work very well. Serious developers would be able to continue improving and expanding the game, and I'm pretty sure MM could use the money :P

This might be an idea, that when he does release, we all try and continue it on.
Eg. Soldat 1.7(DEZ)
However, if we have to pay for the source code, soldat will probably have very few who wish to continue it.

If the source was released, then soldat would live forever. It would be the best thing to happen to it. How do you think games like half life and unreal tournament live so long? cause of thier SDKs and stuff.

I popularity of Soldat is dependent on the support given by the large number of public servers. If its released open source than the servers will choose different branches to host. Unless Michael gets a competent group together to build upon the original then who knows what will happen...
