I'm sitting here at work.
Thinking about the irony of the situation, which is not new at all.
We all expirience those moments at life when something bad happens, then another bad thing happens but it changes the situation so that it actualy helped us feel better.
Yea I know what you're thinking "WHAT THE HELL?"
I'll explain, I wanted to take a little vacation at a friend's house, I had a rare opportunity to take 5 days off work.
That friend of mine, she was always available and willing to host me but I could never take alot of days off, max 3 days, but this rare opportunity was conditioned and wasn't even sure.
So here I am talking to a co-worker that was suposed to replace me, and she tells me she cant!
But allas! 10 seconds later, my friend pages me on MSN and tells me that she's busy this weekened so we'll have to reschedule.

Now that second thing actualy made me feel good, and that made me think, like in math when u multiply a minus with a minus it becomes a plus (yea I know it doent happen when u add but work with me here..)

And that automaticly gave me a nice metaphore! optemistic ppl are ppl who multiply stuff thus finding good in every bad.
while pasemistic ppl are ppl who add stuff, just seeing the bad in everything and adding everything bad to the list of "bad things that happened to me".

The things that you think of when you're bored at work ey...

That took you three minutes to read?

Wow, that sucks for you... Although while maths may not have alot to do with what you just wrote, I [CENSORED]ing hate maths, even though in my class I'm referred to as a 'human calculator'.

And how much time you've wasted writing this?
think about the amount of time you'll keep reading my posts and saying you wasted your time!
you could save that time, and do something usefull with it start now and dont read my posts :) bet ya you're going to keep doing it though over and over and over again. because you're that _______.

Reading comprehension sucks too!
since 3 is not a negative number. thus -3 x 3 is irrelevent same as the rest.
but mate, nice display of calculation there, a human calculator indeed.

Yeah Ok I'm that ________, I've wasted less than 20 seconds writing it. I don't read all your posts. You already lost your bet because you're that ________.

Now for the contribution to this topic. I think it's a bunch of horsecrap, you can't mathematically compare people, any theories, for fun or not are completely useless and a waste of posting. Thank you.

I gotta agree with Outcast here...nice theory, but just funny. If your girl dumped you and then I came along to break your knees in your sleep, how posivite would those numbers turn out to be?

I wouldn't go calling other peoples reading comprehension skills poor when you're writing a theory that isn't too comprehensible to begin with ^_^

Sheesh, what theory?! I was just wondering with my thoughts when I was bored and decided to write it here.
Not only its not displayed as a theory, I actualy gave it another name "a nice metaphore"
You know, like math teachers and their god awefull jokes revolving math.

But then again, if you couldn't call it a theory, you wouldn't be able to vulture , so I guess I understand, go ahead dear have your fun.

But here's a nice theory for you, each forum has a specific nature to it, I wrote this same post (in hebrew though) in another forum.
And a nice discussion about optemisem started, I'm not sure exactly why, but prehapes it has to do with the first few posts, if those first few posts will start a discussion , then vultures will not post since its even more stupid writing "waste of time" when ppl actualy discuss it, they would probably just leave the thread, you know like in school when kids do what the majority does inorder to be "in" or whatever.

I can't say it has something with age, since the guy who started that discussion in the other forum is 17yo. so the theory revolves around the first few posts and ofcourse the general nature of the forum.

Oh and outcast , this post was longer then the first one so add up how much time you wasted so far (oh yes, add it because you're such a pasemistic prick)
Now here's a funny situation , if he'll post he'll just be proving my point that he keeps reading my posts! even in a useless waste of time thread like this is , but will he be able to resist?

Oh god, I'm so bored <_<

Meh...when I originally looked at the title I was expecting a bit more, I guess. Not that your idea (theory is a loose term imo) isn't interesting, but what about patterns and math in nature? You know, like the spiral of shells and oscillations in currents, population...stuff like that.

Ok
April 6, 2006, 12:55 am
now you see, if you wrote that as a first post it might have started a nice discussion.
You're right, there are much more interesting aspects of math revolving life issues, as you said.
As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure alot of math subjects such as geomatry came from philosofic minds.
But allas I was just bored at work and was trying to be optemistic around a situation that really bumbed me out, and actualy succeded so I came here and wrote it, atleast I wasn't bored anymore , I am now though :(

I remember at one message board someone made a post saying .999 repeating equals 1, which is obviously true. Pretty soon there was like 10 pages of debate of wether or not it was true. A lot of people who said it wasn't true were very confident of themselves, and were calling the other people stupid. It was hilarious to read.

"equals" means "is the exact same as", hence:
0,999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 does not equal 1, but

im not talking about 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 or 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999. I'm talking about .999..., meaning repeated infintely.

Do you believe 1/3 = .333...? Then 3 * 1/3 = 1 = 3 * .333... = .999... = 1

The Geologist
April 6, 2006, 7:14 pm
Once you deal with numbers particularly large or small, assuming they're equal to one or zero at certain points along the way is perfectly normal and works just fine with most calculations (not the really hard, specific once though). I've learned it to be a bit of a judgement call.

.99999999999 is approximately 1, for mathetmatic purposes gives you the same results as one for the most part, etc. 0.9 isn't close about because it's off by .10, where as the other number is off by 0.000000000001 or such a small number that it makes little difference. It would be the same thing with exponents. Exp(-21) is such a small number that especially in applications like chemistry it essentially becomes zero or has no bearing on results. I guess if I had to say something to sum it up, it would be that these things are not entirely equal, but since the results they produce are so similar we make the assumption they are for many applications.

The concept of zero is pretty odd in my opinion...a number that is nothing representing infinty.

edit: No, 3* 1/3 = 1 exactly. The threes cancle and the one is left over, there is no .999. It looks odd like that though, because 1/3 is .3333 repeating. Meh..scratch that, prolly just another incident of rounding up with an impossibly large chain of .9999999999999 to 1

Swarmer

I did say 3 * 1/3 = 1 exactly.
I said: 3* .333... = .999...

When I end something in ..., I mean it goes on forever. I'm not talking about the finite terms .333 or .999. I'm talking about .333... and .999..., which I use to represent .333 repeating and .999 repeating.

and yes, .999... is EXACTLY 1. This is something you should be able to figure out after learning about limits in pre-calculus.
1 - .999... = 0
rearrange that and you get .999... = 1

As a summation,
9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ... = .999... = 1
Thats just the summation of 9 * (1/10)^k, where k goes to infinity. Thats just a simple geometric series, which adds up to 1.

Just remember this psuedo-math: C/infinity = 0, and C/0 = infinity, where C is a real number like 1 or 346. You can't technically solve those equations, but that's what they basically are. 1 divided by an infinitely large number is 0, and 1 divided by an infinitely small number is infinity large.

April 12, 2006, 6:16 am
BAH!!!!!
First of all, I do try to keep kosher and all, but I can assure you I never tasted kosher gum, that's "hardcore" judaism.
Second of all, I don't ALWAYS keep all these traditions, mostly because I'm not relgious.
There are jews, and there are Israelis, those are 2 different things!
Infact most israelis are less jewish then jews outside of Israel when it comes to keeping tradition and all.

Though most of the food in Israel IS kosher, since it is a jewish country, but other then keeping milk and meat away from my mouth at the same time, and making sure I'm not eating pig meat I'm not keeping other tradition, infact just to other day I had a milk dessert after having a meat meal because I REALLY wanted too at that moment.

So there, never tasted "kosher gum" , and sure upload the scanned gum and we'll see what you're talking about :)
