Im new at this, so how do you start the game and what patches do i need?

Look for a Soldat.exe file in your Soldat directory.
You don't need any patches if you have version 1.3.1.

1. Start Soldat. Press Start Game.
2. Soldat is better than other games. No patches.

If you download the latest version you don't need any patches. You need a working and updated version of DirectX, and that's about it as far as I know.

goto soldat.pl and download Soldat 1.3.1
Set it up and thats it. You can play

no patches, just the latest 1.3.1 version of game

you install install it like any other game and paly it like any other game..aka click the shortcut once installed...and if you download the latest version no need to worry about patches...soldat isnt like cs..the latest version is still a small download
