The biggest ram chip you can get is a 1 gig, I believe. I bought a 512MB for $60. Most computers have four slots, laptops usually have two slots, and those awsome less-than-one-month-old desktops can have eight.

I'm soon to be getting a laptop, thats just like my Desktop comptuer. after that, when I get some work, I'll do a major overhaul on both computers, and get them running half decent games. (although my desktop seems to run SOF2, Halo, UT, BIA alright, except my HDD is screwed, which is making the comp lag so much. Computer parts here in Aussie cost to much for my budget. I guess I could go on Ebay...

246MB RAM

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)

Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset (crappy integrated card)

I intend to improve on this vastly by August

May 24, 2006, 4:28 am
SadistAtHeart: upgrade to a gigabyte of RAM and you'll see an insane speed increase. There's no way that you can continue to use that with only 246MB RAM, especially because integrated graphics uses that memory too.

Also , HyperThreading != 2 CPUs, even though windows XP tells you it is

Wait wait, it just hit me, Flies you own 19 computers and you asked us for donations?
I mean what on earth can our donations help? and how the hell did you fund all those computers..
Just wondering, no offense meant.

My computer is , I think the second suckiest here.. not sure though:
P4- 1.6ghz
Ram: 512 it was 256 but I "upgraded"
G-Force2- 64mb I think MMX or something, not sure..

Oh and I have another computer in my living room that was suposed to be used as a "movie" computer, its a P-2 350 that I overclocked to 450 with 128mb of ram and a Voodoo3 graphic card , which is just the minimum requirments for playing divx movies, but then the HD died and that's the end of that..

Ok I needed the donations at the time because I did not have a job and I was entirely broke. I can afford 16 computers because I do have jobs most of the year, and my servers are pretty much the only thing I spend the money on.

3 of the 4 hard drives I bought for my current system are no longer functioning so I decided to finish building my 64 bit.

AMD 64x 3500+ 2.2Ghz
DFI LanParty UT DDX2000
2 X 512MB Dual channel
2 X SATA 3.0gb/s 80GB Hard drives in a Raid 0 config
ATI Rage video card ;)
Windows XP 64x edition

Clear acrylic case
2 UV lights
Internal DVD burner
Internal CD
External CD burner
Floppy Drive :D

Upgrades expected in the next 4 months...
+2 512MB dual Channel
+2 Crossifre video cards

Upgrades expected in the next 8 months...
+4 80GB SATA (4 in a Raid 0+1, 2 in a Raid 0)

Upgrades in the next 12 months....
AMD 64x X2 4600
Windows Vista

bja888
May 25, 2006, 9:29 pm
The whole reason I'm going 64 bit is to be able to do more at once. In my line of work I usually have...
Photoshop
Imageready
Visual Studio 2003 (f*** studio 2005)
un-named ftp
un-named html program
several folders
a few images
3 Browsers with several tabs open on each
Thunderbird
chat programs
windows media player

.... all open constantly.

Occasional others...
Flash
Illistrator
Skype
RealVNC

I never wait for one task to finish before switching to another. I need full 64 bit support.
I hear win XP 64x doesn't take full advantage of being 64x.
And since I can't get linux versions of the industry leading programs (mostly flash and photoshop), I cant switch over. Although I am using a linux partition for all my 3D rendering with a FAT partition to communicate files between OSs.

Long explination short, as much as I really don't want to. I will still have to when it comes out.

Let's see here...

Manufacturer: My dad pieced it together
HDD: Maxtor 30G
CD/DVD Drives: Samsung DVD ROM and a (half-broken...) Pioneer DVD RW, and YAY, a 3 quater inch floppy drive!
Keyboard: Black/Silver (Sexiest thing on my machine) Genius KB-29e
Mouse: (Lamest thing on my machine) hP ball mouse, my sister's PS/2 port died so she took my sexy blue optical (it was USB...)
Network Adaptors: TP-LINK 11b/g Wireless Adapter
Videocard: NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4200
Processor: Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz Chip
Sound: Black XSonic 2.1 (I'm not sure but) Surround Sound
USB: 2 2.0 ports and 2 (more broken) 1.1 ports
Monitor: A Grey (and lame) ViewSonic E70 (what the hell is ViewSonic?)
RAM: 256 MB
Operationg System: Windows XP Home Edition (Was at one stage Windows ME, unless that was my old computer)

That's pretty much it.

By the way, if you don't know some of the internal hardware (video card, , you CAN check the Device Manager, it has information on Hard Drives, Optical Drives, Video Cards and more. It is in My Computer => Properties => Hardware Tab.

Personal computers have no need for 8 ram slots, doesn't XP only support 4 GB of ram any way. Only servers are loaded with extra crap like that.

frogboy
June 3, 2006, 1:21 am
XP only supports 4GB of RAM because it runs on 32-bit processors.

livingdalife
June 3, 2006, 2:18 am
so thats when 64bit technoligy comes in...but as far as i know, theres no compatibility for 64bit and Windows XP.
Please Explain!

bja888
June 3, 2006, 5:08 am
Windows XP Pro 64 bit edition, Windows server 2003 64 bit edition, .Net framework and Windows Vista (was build on .Net Framework).
That's all of the windows products that support 64 bit technology. Even if you operating system was not designed for a 64 bit processor you can still run as 32 bit.

Linux is way ahead of windows for 64 bit support. Most linux distros have full 64 bit support.

*goes and buys a 64bit processor*
I find it funny.
I have all that *minimal requirements* for my PC, and its slow as hell. I thought it was a virus, but I did a virus check and it came out with nothing...When I first got my PC, it had Windows XP on it, and it ran fine...hell, when I first got it, I ran Unreal Tournament 2004 on it. Now I can't even run Brothers In Arms...and if I'm listening to music, and decide to do sumthing else (load up Firefox, or check my emails with Outlook Express, I get this real ugly sound, like my music slows down and the comp lags for a few seconds...Please explain?
I thought about re-installing Windows...but sum dumbass twat in my family decided to spill lemonade all over my computer desk, and hit my 200 dollar Windows XP cd...so I'm pretty much screwed...can some-one help me cure my PC???...
PLZ?...

take some [CENSORED] off your computer that you dont need?

bja888
June 3, 2006, 4:32 pm
Never go any longer than a year without reformatting your hard drive. Windows was designed to make things work faster but it actually makes things slowed in the long run. Every time you install a program, every time you run a program, every time you visit a website, basically everything you do creates a temp file or two (thousand). A lot of the temp data does get deleted but over time you will notice it starts slowing down due to the access of crap left over from every day use.

Not sure if linux has the same problem because I never used it for long periods of time.... FLAB?

For the record, the CD wasn't 200$. The product key is $200 you can get software free.

Why do people place lights in their cases.

Lights generate heat. Heat != effeciency.
